Dear Director Hunter,
I just have one question: What did I do wrong? You have audacity to name your organization after Phyllis Wheatley? All I did was migrate, not menace. You used the phrase “doubtful character” to describe the men who I try to love. Yet, what you fail to realize is that your character is beyond doubtful: it is downright hypocritical. Ms. Hunter you speak out against the “patriarchal” city government but you impose a matriarchal domestic and interpersonal terrorism. I cannot tolerate this any longer. Consider this is my letter of resignation from your program. I will go to nursing school and no more trying to be a nice little maid. I will be an educated and working LADY. A Black… Lady.
Finally,
A Southern Belle
1.How does the Phyllis Wheatley Association further compound the exploitive power structures in the urban settings for black women? Is there any validity or grounds for the matriarchal power to exist over the black woman’s body?
2.Does the black bourgeoisie still function today as an oppressive force to working class blacks?
